We all hope that New Year will bring us good tidings - as we routinely look around for signs to either confirm or shatter our hopes. Most of the signs are uniformly boring, but once in a while there comes a really weird exception. You'll see them on this page: the products of local idiocy, and yet sometimes - perhaps an unintentional brilliance!

Japan saw most of its infrastructure bombed back to the stone age in the final years of World War II, which makes the country's post-war rejuvenation all the more astounding. Huge, complex public works projects saw a concrete & steel web of highways, bridges and interchanges blossom from the wreckage of war. Today, shaped by the demands of restrictive space and economic boom & bust, Japan's hardened transportation arteries display artistic forms that go far beyond their functions.

Most people that love to travel, especially families, tend to explore the wonders of the world during daytime. Unfortunately for these travelers, they miss out on the complete transformation that occurs in these cities once the sun is gone. If you thought these places were glorious during the day, wait till you see them at night.

2008 has been an eventful year to say the least - it is difficult to sum up the thousands of stories in just a handful of photographs. That said, I will try to do what I've done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It's not the story of 2008, it's certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. This is a multi-entry story, 120 photographs over three days. Watch for part 2 and part 3 tomorrow and the next day. (40 photos total)

Thin buildings–in Japan, where real estate is prohibitively expensive, there are lots of them. You’ve probably seen one of these: quaintly slender buildings sandwiched between two large ones; sharp, pointed corner structures hugging every available space. Even apartments in which (we assume) tenants aren’t allowed to get too fat are not an uncommon sight

As winter approaches in the northern hemisphere and the nights draw in, our thoughts turn to the beauty of ice and snow. Winter photography, especially in the colder parts of the world, is a specialized niche. Photographers have to take care of their cameras and guard against frostbite and hypothermia. They often venture into remote wilderness searching for the perfect winter landscape. Their reward is stunning imagery.

deputy dog recently posted a collection of strange and unusual drainpipes. while pipes, downspouts and drainage systems are not usually considers very intriguing, these examples prove that they can at least be creative. seattle artist buster simpson is responsible for the first two examples, which capture runoff rainwater and direct it into planters. in a city with as much rain as seattle, this will no doubt add some greenery to the city’s vertical surfaces. the example below is a little more playful drainpipe from germany. as water flows through, it twists and turns through a series of obstacles, creating some unique sounds and visuals.

With the end of the Olympics in Beijing, all eyes turned for a moment to London, site of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. While looking for good photographs of London, I was contacted by London photographer Jason Hawkes, who had some wonderful images of London, seen from above at night (from a helicopter, to be exact) - some of which which he's agreed to let me share here. From Jason: "Shooting aerial photography during the daytime had its own difficulties, you are strapped tightly into a harness leaning out of the helicopter, shouting directions through the headsets to the pilot. If shooting in the day can be difficult, night and the lack of light causes its own set of problems, but overcoming them is half the fun and the results can be stunning. I shoot at night using the very latest digital cameras, mounted on either one or two gyro stablazied mounts, depending on the format of the camera and length of lens I'm having to use."

Photos taken with a camera do not represent a single moment of time. Due to technological constraints these shots stand for some scene over a brief period of time. This time frame depends on the camera’s shutter speed. In motion blur, any object moving with respect to the camera will look blurred or smeared along the direction of relative motion.

Color is how the human eye perceives the reflection of different spectrums of light. We perceive color just as we perceive taste: sublime, exquisite, horrible and delicious. It provokes us, it enchants us and our whole world revolves around it. Everything from the clothes we wear, to the foods we eat are determined by color. It’s only fitting then, that we explore some of Mother Nature’s most colorful works. The kaleidoscope of colors presented in this series of spectacular lake images, encapsulate the incredible natural beauty of enclosed expanses of water.

Spending a lot of time on the beach doesn't have to be all about leisure. Some incredibly talented sculptors work extremely hard while enjoying the sun and surf in their own unique ways. Though these sand creations are often washed away by a wave within hours, indoor sand sculptures can last up to a year.

If you are a horror movie buff, you’ve certainly noticed the liberal use of trees to set the mood. Halloween is hardly complete without the image of a moon-lit and fog-laden tree. However, some trees have been molded by Mother Nature into specters of their own. Scary, frightening, or downright weird, the trees we’ve amassed in this collection will leave you wondering if Mother Nature herself digested some magic mushrooms.

If you’re like me, as a kid, you probably enjoyed throwing heavy objects off super-high buildings, just to see how long it took and what they looked like when they smashed. As a responsible adult, I now get my pleasure in gazing at water falling from extremely high cliffs and splashing into the rocks. It’s quite spectacular. We wanted to find out more, so we decided to research what the tallest waterfalls in the world were, measured by the highest drops.

A dense slice of luscious mixed berry cheesecake with a dribble of a scarlet raspberry coulis on the side. A crusty, jalapeno bread grilled cheese sandwich piled up with 4 oz of oozing jarlsberg. Braised porkchops with sautéed apples. Roasted chicken with cilantro dip. Can’t you just taste it? Droplets of drool are forming around the corners of your mouth. This is what foodporn does. And those who can’t get enough of those stunningly up close and personal shots of sides of beef and spectacular layer cakes should look no further than FoodPornDaily. The site serves you up with that one prize shot. Then you click and go on to another. And another. And another. Of course, after a while you’ll probably have to go and grab something to eat. It’s that enticing. Potentially NSFW.

Photography is a very powerful medium and a very difficult craft. Excellent photos don’t only display some facts — they tell stories, awake feelings and manage to share with the audience the emotions a photographer experienced when clicking the shot button. Taking excellent pictures is damn hard as you need to find a perfect perspective and consider the perfect timing. To achieve brilliant photography you need practice and patience. However, it is worth it: the results can be truly stunning.

Rarindra Prakarsa is a photographer and Photoshop artist working out of Indonesia who has an incredibly rich portfolio of work to show off. His stuff is reverberating around the Web right now, but it’s worth repeating here. Even if you don’t like the style (and some people may perhaps find it to be a little cheesy or overblown) you have to admire the sheer style of the compositions and the amount of effort these photos take.

With sumo dominated by Mongolians and Sony already fielding a foreigner in the fold, the giant of all Japanese giants, Godzilla, also seems to have finally succumb to the force of foreign infiltration. As a kid you probably enjoyed making sandcastles on the beach but did you ever think sandcastles could be so big, so elaborate or intricate? Some take it seriously, very seriously. Amateurs, artists and businesses from around the globe compete to win the prestige, prizes and press attention from their sandcastles AKA sand sculptures, the more accurate term for this peculiar endeavour. Even the corporates at companies such as eBay take a good sandcastle seriously, eBay commissioned a monster 75 tonne sand sculpture for their 10th anniversary.
